Katie is an amazing person and dog trainer! We brought our Golden mix, Clyde, to her -- he was 8 months old and I had no idea what to do with him. By the end of our first lesson, I realized two things: Clyde actually could think AND we would survive his puppyhood (I'd had my doubts about both things). Katie taught us how to work with the dog and understand his behavior. To be honest, I'm not sure who she helped more -- us or Clyde. In addition, she's got a fantastic setup for training. Everything is very well thought out and her lesson plans are such that you're sure to keep "building on" as you go. In short, if you're in need of help with your pup, go see Katie!

I went to Katie to help me with my wonderful crazy 10 month old Airedale (Amara) who is very confident and can be a bit dominant and pushy. After 3 weeks with Katie and Appalachian Dog trainers, Amara, while still maintaining her wonderful quirky ADT personality, learned impulse control. From day one, after her completed training, we have been able to go everywhere public with confidence. She is able to meet people calmly, ignore other dogs when directed. I can’t thank you and your team enough for helping me and Amara. We look forward to the next step in her training off leash!!!!!

This is my second time taking a dog to Katie. I was so impressed the first time with my 4 year old golden retriever but nothing like what I just saw with my 8 month old lab. The lab was so out of control, I was afraid she was going to cause me to fall and get hurt. Very sweet but very undisciplined. When I received the training video at the end of the session, I thought I had a different dog. I couldn't believe the change!!! When I picked her up, I was so happy with the training she received. If you have a dog that needs training, I highly recommend Katie!

I’m leaving a review a little bit later than anticipated, but I purchased a puppy back in April, Red Boy 8 to be exact. My entire experience working with ADT was so smooth and they made everything so much less stressful for us! 5 months later my handsome little boy is in training to start service work and has been an absolute dream. Fizz has been the absolute best addition to our family and we would absolutely come back again in the future! 🥰🦮

I brought home Rosie previously (Yellow 8) from Summer x Kendas litter early march, as a service prospect and my first puppy! I could not have been better matched, she slept through the night, we had very little accidents for potty training, and she has been the most attentive, food motivated, and focused pup! She is just now hitting adolescence and is about to complete her CGC, she has been so rock solid in her early service dog training and has had so much confidence in every situation! I am so thankful for Katie and how she set Rosie and I up for success!

Goose (formerly Light Blue 7) joined our family earlier this year and we could not have picked a better pup! He has the absolute best demeanor and personality. His sweet disposition is recognized by everyone around and we are regularly recommending Katie for those in search of a golden! We will absolutely be back when we decide to add another furry friend or need training support. Its very clear Katie loves what she does and is proud of her pups. When she walked us out to the car after picking up Goose, she very sweetly kissed him on the nose and told him she loved him, which spoke volumes on the care and attention these dogs receive.

Katie did a wonderful job training my golden retriever. He spent 3 weeks with her and was like a different dog when I picked him up. She kept me updated about his progress and every week provided a report card. At the end of the training, Katie provided a video showing her work with him on each of the obedience steps. It was so obvious he adored her. The video was also so helpful because I can go back and watch it again to make sure I am doing everything correctly. If you're dog needs training, Appalachian Dog Training is wonderful and I recommend her without hesitation!!!

Katie and her team at Appalachian Dog Training are amazing. We brought home our baby girl puppy in January and are so impressed with the quality of care that Appalachian Dog Training gives their dogs and puppies. Highly recommend!

Katie is a an excellent and knowledgeable dog trainer. Her 3 week on leash training class was the perfect solution to my wild natured puppy problem.

My only concern going into the training was my sweet little puppy monster would turn into Robot Puppy Good Girl 9000; however, when I got her back not only was her behavior and recall improved dramatically, but her joyous puppy personality remained 100%!

My little coonhound is better behaved both in the home and on leash around town – no more pulling, so much more sitting and listening, and as a bonus she was taught to untangle her self from the leash!!! Thanks again, Katie!

Thank you so much for helping our family and be such an amazing trainer to Zeus. Today was the first time in over 8 plus years that I went out in public and didn’t worry about my daughter getting away from me. You gave me my life back. I hadn’t realized how much stress that put on me every outing that we used to go on. Today was marvelous.

…and a note about her daughter sleeping through the night for the first time ever…

She got up once, but my husband told her to go back and lay with Zeus and she did!! they both just now woke up. 7:38AM.

We had not had a new puppy in 14 years when we got Rosie and were having so much trouble with every aspect of puppy training that we were seriously considering returning her to the breeder. Instead, we took Rosie to ADT for Puppy Head Start training. She was there for 3 weeks during which we received daily report cards and pictures. At the end of training, we received hands-on training from Katie. We also received a graduation video that we can use for reference when we have questions. ADT made a world of difference! Rosie had mastered house breaking, was able to sleep through the night in her crate, and had learned basic commands.

Since then, we have attended some Saturday group sessions, where Rosie earned her AKC STAR Puppy certificate, and Rosie returned to ADT for 3 weeks of off-lease training. Again, we received thorough training, including a short hike, and a graduation video to ensure that we are able to continue the training at home.

Katie has a calm, positive approach to training. She is very accessible whenever we reach out with questions.

We also board Rosie at ADT when we go out of town. The kennels are roomy and clean and the dogs there always seem happy. When we arrive at ADT, Rosie perks up and is very excited to see Katie and Larkin. Rosie is so excited to be there that I don’t think she even notices when we leave!

Memphis’ Story: From Puppy Prospect to Service Dog in Training

Memphis, a golden retriever from one of Appalachian Dog Training’s previous litters, has grown into an incredible partner for her handler, Hope. From the very beginning, trainers saw her potential, and she’s exceeded every expectation — excelling in training, loving the water, and demonstrating the steady, confident temperament needed to thrive in public access work.

Now approaching her second birthday, Memphis is already practicing advanced tasks like deep pressure therapy, behavior interruption, and public access skills in busy environments. Whether she’s tucking calmly under a table at Starbucks, navigating a crowded grocery store, or joyfully swimming with a toy in her mouth, Memphis balances work and play beautifully.

“Memphis has become my whole world. Knowing there is a chance for her to help be a part of continuing to preserve the breed and share great puppies with other families makes me so happy!”

“I have been so proud of her lately. She has found a huge love for water and retrieving everything you throw, so we are hoping to do dock diving for fun in the future. She is also doing AMAZING with public access and being better and better every day. I don’t know what I’d do without her and am so grateful that our trainers found your program!“

– Hope Botts

“Her favorite thing to practice is tuck when we are out, because she enjoys people watching. This past week she demonstrated rear end awareness with a shopping cart and did amazing in the grocery store on a busy Saturday.“
