Helping Kids Understand Service Dogs: Sunshine’s Story
Helping Kids Understand Service Dogs: Sunshine’s Story
Sunshine, a golden retriever trained here at Appalachian Dog Training in Mills River, NC, is now the inspiration behind a new children’s book, Sunshine Becomes a Service Dog! The book helps kids and families understand what service dogs do and why they matter — and may help children who need a service dog themselves feel less alone.

From Training to the Page
We’re honored that Sunshine’s journey is now being shared through the children’s book Sunshine Becomes a Service Dog, written by Sunshine’s own family — the same family whose daughter Sunshine was trained to support. The book offers a gentle, age-appropriate look at how a well-trained service dog can change daily life in meaningful ways — written especially for children who may be receiving a service dog themselves, or who simply want to understand a classmate’s or sibling’s service dog.
A Children’s Book Helping Kids Understand Service Dogs
Sunshine completed his service dog training with us, developing the focus, reliability, and confidence needed to support a child with special needs. He showed from early on that he had the temperament and heart for this work — and that story is exactly what makes him such a meaningful subject for a children’s book.
The book also supports Hope4Sunshine, a foundation started by Sunshine’s family, which is dedicated to helping children gain access to trained service dogs and the education and resources that support these life-changing partnerships.
Service dogs like Sunshine aren’t just companions — they’re working animals protected under the Americans with Disabilities Act, which guarantees them public access alongside the people they support. Helping kids understand that distinction early on builds empathy and respect for both the dog and the child or family they serve.
Why This Book Matters
We’re incredibly proud of Sunshine and grateful to have been part of his training journey — and even more grateful that his story can now help other children understand what service dogs do. Books like this give kids a gentle, relatable way to make sense of something that might otherwise feel unfamiliar or confusing, whether they’re meeting a service dog for the first time or preparing to get one of their own.
If you’d like to learn more about Sunshine, support Hope4Sunshine, or explore Sunshine Becomes a Service Dog, we encourage you to check out the book and share his story.
Frequently Asked Questions
Sunshine Becomes a Service Dog is a children’s book based on the real story of Sunshine, a golden retriever trained by Appalachian Dog Training. It’s designed to help kids understand what service dogs do and why they matter.
A book written for kids can explain a service dog’s role — what tasks they perform, how they help, and why they need space to focus — in simple, relatable language. This is especially helpful for children who will be receiving a service dog themselves, or classmates and siblings learning how to interact with one.
A service dog is trained to perform specific tasks that help a person with a disability or special need navigate daily life — from providing physical support to offering sensory or emotional grounding. Unlike therapy or emotional support animals, service dogs undergo extensive task-specific training.
