Our Training Method
We teach with purpose, correct with fairness, and train for the real world—building calm, confident companions and owners who can trust their dog anywhere.
Real Training. Real Dogs. Real Life.
At Appalachian Dog Training, our training method is rooted in clarity, consistency, and respect for the dog. We believe freedom comes from structure, and that balanced, thoughtful training creates calm, confident companions who can thrive anywhere.
Our Training Approach
At Appalachian Dog Training, we don’t believe in one-size-fits-all methods or trendy shortcuts. We believe in understanding dogs as they actually are—thinking, learning, working animals—and building a relationship that allows them to thrive as true companions.
Training isn’t about control. It’s about communication, purpose, and partnership.
Dogs learn in stages, and each stage builds on the last. We start by teaching commands clearly, then introduce accountability, and finally proof those skills in real-world environments so they hold up anywhere.
This process builds calm, confident dogs who understand exactly what’s expected of them—and owners who know how to maintain that success long after training ends.
Our promise
We can’t guarantee a dog’s future behavior, but we can guarantee our best effort, our full transparency, and our ongoing support.
- We respect every dog’s individual learning process.
- We teach owners how to continue success at home.
- We offer refresher training to reinforce progress and keep results strong.
At Appalachian Dog Training, your success is ours.
Together, we’ll help your dog earn real freedom through clear structure and calm communication.
Companionship Begins With Purpose
Dogs are born to work.
That work might look like hiking beside you, calmly existing in a busy household, playing with your kids, or becoming your steady companion through retirement.
When a dog is given a clear, directed job, they’re given something even more valuable than obedience: a way to belong.
Without purpose, a dog will still expend their energy—but often in ways that create frustration, confusion, and conflict. That’s when behaviors emerge that push dog and human further apart.
Training provides direction. Direction creates trust. Trust is what turns a dog into a companion.
That is what true companionship is: returning the gift they have given you.
“When you have a dog, you never truly walk alone.” – Anonymous
Training is a process
Every dog is different. Every owner is different.
That means training must live in the middle ground between both.
We customize training by considering:
- Your lifestyle, routines, and activities
- Your personality and communication style
- Your dog’s temperament, energy level, learning speed, and behavior patterns
The goal is not to force either of you to change who you are—but to help you meet each other where you are, with clarity and consistency.
Customized Training
Dogs never stop learning.
Every interaction either reinforces helpful behaviors—or unintentionally teaches the wrong ones. You don’t get to turn learning off, but you can shape the environment, expectations, and rewards to guide your dog toward your objectives.
Training is akin to eating healthy, reading, and exercising; occasional activity helps, but the real results come from making it a daily habit, a routine, a non-negotiable. Training succeeds when owners actively participate, practice consistently, and carry the structure home.
We are your training guide; you are doing all the reps.
“You’ve achieved success in your field when you don’t know
whether what you’re doing is work or play.” – Warren Beatty
The Stages of Training
- Learning as Play: We show dogs that learning is a game—engaging, rewarding, and fun.
- Introducing Rules: As the game progresses, structure is added. Rules are clear, predictable, and fair.
- Understanding the System: Dogs learn how the rules work and how to use them to keep the game going.
- Communication Through Training: The rules become a shared language—a way for you to ask your dog for behaviors they understand.
- Purposeful Work: With learning and structure in place, training becomes the dog’s job—fulfilling their need to work, move, and connect with you.
This is where confidence grows. This is where behavior stabilizes. This is where real companionship forms.
Seeing the World Through Your Dog's Eyes
We show you the dogs’ true psychology and needs, removing the trendy internet crazes, ideas and viral trends that are detrimental to the dogs well being, or frankly, just a waste of time and money with no benefit to your dog, either!
By understanding canine psychology, cognition, and limitations—and letting go of the “Disney dog” fantasy—you can finally see your dog as they truly exist.
When you see your dog clearly, communication becomes possible.
When communication exists, the bond deepens.
That bond grows with every purposeful interaction, every learning moment, and every shared adventure.

Katie is an amazing person and dog trainer! We brought our Golden mix, Clyde, to her -- he was 8 months old and I had no idea what to do with him. By the end of our first lesson, I realized two things: Clyde actually could think AND we would survive his puppyhood (I'd had my doubts about both things). Katie taught us how to work with the dog and understand his behavior. To be honest, I'm not sure who she helped more -- us or Clyde. In addition, she's got a fantastic setup for training. Everything is very well thought out and her lesson plans are such that you're sure to keep "building on" as you go. In short, if you're in need of help with your pup, go see Katie!Posted on Google![]()

I went to Katie to help me with my wonderful crazy 10 month old Airedale (Amara) who is very confident and can be a bit dominant and pushy. After 3 weeks with Katie and Appalachian Dog trainers, Amara, while still maintaining her wonderful quirky ADT personality, learned impulse control. From day one, after her completed training, we have been able to go everywhere public with confidence. She is able to meet people calmly, ignore other dogs when directed. I can’t thank you and your team enough for helping me and Amara. We look forward to the next step in her training off leash!!!!!Posted on Google![]()

This is my second time taking a dog to Katie. I was so impressed the first time with my 4 year old golden retriever but nothing like what I just saw with my 8 month old lab. The lab was so out of control, I was afraid she was going to cause me to fall and get hurt. Very sweet but very undisciplined. When I received the training video at the end of the session, I thought I had a different dog. I couldn't believe the change!!! When I picked her up, I was so happy with the training she received. If you have a dog that needs training, I highly recommend Katie!Posted on Google![]()

I’m leaving a review a little bit later than anticipated, but I purchased a puppy back in April, Red Boy 8 to be exact. My entire experience working with ADT was so smooth and they made everything so much less stressful for us! 5 months later my handsome little boy is in training to start service work and has been an absolute dream. Fizz has been the absolute best addition to our family and we would absolutely come back again in the future! 🥰🦮Posted on Google![]()

I brought home Rosie previously (Yellow 8) from Summer x Kendas litter early march, as a service prospect and my first puppy! I could not have been better matched, she slept through the night, we had very little accidents for potty training, and she has been the most attentive, food motivated, and focused pup! She is just now hitting adolescence and is about to complete her CGC, she has been so rock solid in her early service dog training and has had so much confidence in every situation! I am so thankful for Katie and how she set Rosie and I up for success!Posted on Google![]()

Goose (formerly Light Blue 7) joined our family earlier this year and we could not have picked a better pup! He has the absolute best demeanor and personality. His sweet disposition is recognized by everyone around and we are regularly recommending Katie for those in search of a golden! We will absolutely be back when we decide to add another furry friend or need training support. Its very clear Katie loves what she does and is proud of her pups. When she walked us out to the car after picking up Goose, she very sweetly kissed him on the nose and told him she loved him, which spoke volumes on the care and attention these dogs receive.Posted on Google![]()

Katie did a wonderful job training my golden retriever. He spent 3 weeks with her and was like a different dog when I picked him up. She kept me updated about his progress and every week provided a report card. At the end of the training, Katie provided a video showing her work with him on each of the obedience steps. It was so obvious he adored her. The video was also so helpful because I can go back and watch it again to make sure I am doing everything correctly. If you're dog needs training, Appalachian Dog Training is wonderful and I recommend her without hesitation!!!Posted on Google![]()

Katie and her team at Appalachian Dog Training are amazing. We brought home our baby girl puppy in January and are so impressed with the quality of care that Appalachian Dog Training gives their dogs and puppies. Highly recommend!
