Why families choose our program

OFA & PennHIP
Health Tested

Every breeding dog in our program completes full orthopedic and genetic health screening through OFA and Penn (PennHIP) before being bred. That means fewer surprises and a healthier, longer-lived puppy for your family.

AKC
Registered

Every litter is AKC registered, with documented pedigrees going back four generations of dogs selected specifically for health, structure, and working temperament.

Best
Matched

We don’t do first-come, first-served. We get to know your home, your experience level, and what you want from your Golden, then match you with the puppy whose temperament actually fits your life.

Training
Foundations

Every puppy starts Avidog®-informed early socialization and training protocols from day one — building curiosity, confidence, and problem-solving before they ever leave for their new home.

Founder & Head Trainer

After years of training dogs, Katie began breeding Golden Retrievers with one goal: to produce the healthy, stable, trainable dogs she wished more people had access to. Every litter is raised in her home and thoughtfully bred for health, temperament, and lifelong success.

Founder & Head Trainer

Katie spent years training dogs before she ever began breeding them. That experience shapes every pairing, puppy evaluation, and placement. She started her Golden Retriever program to give more families access to the stable, trainable dogs she valued in her own work, and she remains hands-on with every litter from birth through go-home.

After we connect and confirm the program is a good fit, approved families are invited to place a deposit and join the waitlist. From there, we guide you through next steps and help match each puppy based on temperament, lifestyle, and family needs. As the puppies grow and their personalities develop, we work carefully to match each puppy with the most appropriate home with the objective & transparent puppy temperament test AVIDOG. You get to see each puppy, how they perform, and what that translates to in terms of energy levels and personality traits.

Can I purchase an Appalachian Golden Retriever as an owner-trained service dog prospect?2026-09-12T02:42:49+00:00

Yes. Because a successful service-dog placement depends on both the puppy’s temperament and the owner’s training support, applicants must secure an approved professional service-dog trainer or program before we can approve them for a service-dog prospect.

The trainer or program must provide:

  • In-person training or a hybrid program that includes in-person support; remote-only programs do not qualify
  • Service-dog-specific education through an established school or vocational program, such as Highland Canine or Bergin University of Canine Studies
  • An established owner-trained service-dog program with its structure published online
  • Previous experience successfully graduating working service-dog teams
  • Experience with the applicant’s specific disability-related tasks
  • Guidance identifying the tasks the dog will perform and the temperament best suited to those needs
  • Support evaluating and selecting an appropriate puppy

General dog-training certifications, including CPDT or KPA credentials, do not qualify a trainer for this placement unless the trainer also meets our service-dog-specific education and experience requirements.

Applicants must provide their trainer’s website and contact information so we can review the program and confirm that it meets our requirements.

Not every puppy will have the environmental stability, sound confidence, resilience, and other traits required for service work. The percentage of suitable prospects varies by litter, and placement cannot be guaranteed. Applicants must remain flexible regarding sex to have the best opportunity for a successful match. If the current litter does not produce the right prospect for an applicant’s needs, we will ask them to wait for a future litter rather than place an unsuitable puppy.

Do you offer discounted pricing for service-dog organizations and companies?2026-09-12T02:42:54+00:00

Yes. Appalachian Golden Retrievers offers discounted puppy pricing for approved service-dog organizations, training programs, and companies. Please contact us directly to discuss your organization, placement needs, and availability.
