Board & Train

The Transformation

Board & Train works because it creates and environment of focus, structure and repetition. Your dog isn’t just learning commands — they’re practicing them in every day situations like walks, play with other dogs, and outings to pet-friendly spaces. This combination of professional instruction, real-world practice, and consistent routines allows your dog to build confidence, reduce stress and return home with skills you can trust.

We teach both you and your dog individually, then bring you together to train as a team. Our Training Center provides groups of friendly dogs, daily visitors, several caretakers, and unique socialization experiences such as bike rides and meeting ponies. You graduate from Board and Train working together as a team, confident and prepared to use your dog’s commands in everyday life—whether heeling on a daily neighborhood walk or responding in the moment when a delivery arrives, an unexpected dog appears, or a fast recall is needed to avoid trouble.

life after board & Train

With your dog’s Board & Train complete, you go home and begin building a new relationship rooted in trust, understanding, and respect. Every interaction—feeding, care, obedience, exercise, play, and connection—becomes part of your shared language.

What You’ll Take Home

  • Access to a custom training video for quick reference and consistency at home
  • Clear communication skills so everyone in your household—partners, kids, or dog walkers—can participate in the training
  • A predictable daily structure your dog understands and thrives within
  • The ability to speak to your dog in a way they truly understand, demonstrated by reliable follow-through
  • Practical tools to gain control quickly in real-life moments
  • Professional techniques, timing, and reinforcement that work both at home and on walks
  • Confidence and pride knowing you are giving your dog the best life possible

What to Expect

Board & Train is not the easy way out. After graduation, you’ll continue with mapped training sessions—approximately three minutes, three times per day—along with spontaneous, in-the-moment reinforcement throughout daily life.

Katie is an amazing person and dog trainer! We brought our Golden mix, Clyde, to her -- he was 8 months old and I had no idea what to do with him. By the end of our first lesson, I realized two things: Clyde actually could think AND we would survive his puppyhood (I'd had my doubts about both things). Katie taught us how to work with the dog and understand his behavior. To be honest, I'm not sure who she helped more -- us or Clyde. In addition, she's got a fantastic setup for training. Everything is very well thought out and her lesson plans are such that you're sure to keep "building on" as you go. In short, if you're in need of help with your pup, go see Katie!

I went to Katie to help me with my wonderful crazy 10 month old Airedale (Amara) who is very confident and can be a bit dominant and pushy. After 3 weeks with Katie and Appalachian Dog trainers, Amara, while still maintaining her wonderful quirky ADT personality, learned impulse control. From day one, after her completed training, we have been able to go everywhere public with confidence. She is able to meet people calmly, ignore other dogs when directed. I can’t thank you and your team enough for helping me and Amara. We look forward to the next step in her training off leash!!!!!

This is my second time taking a dog to Katie. I was so impressed the first time with my 4 year old golden retriever but nothing like what I just saw with my 8 month old lab. The lab was so out of control, I was afraid she was going to cause me to fall and get hurt. Very sweet but very undisciplined. When I received the training video at the end of the session, I thought I had a different dog. I couldn't believe the change!!! When I picked her up, I was so happy with the training she received. If you have a dog that needs training, I highly recommend Katie!

I’m leaving a review a little bit later than anticipated, but I purchased a puppy back in April, Red Boy 8 to be exact. My entire experience working with ADT was so smooth and they made everything so much less stressful for us! 5 months later my handsome little boy is in training to start service work and has been an absolute dream. Fizz has been the absolute best addition to our family and we would absolutely come back again in the future! 🥰🦮

I brought home Rosie previously (Yellow 8) from Summer x Kendas litter early march, as a service prospect and my first puppy! I could not have been better matched, she slept through the night, we had very little accidents for potty training, and she has been the most attentive, food motivated, and focused pup! She is just now hitting adolescence and is about to complete her CGC, she has been so rock solid in her early service dog training and has had so much confidence in every situation! I am so thankful for Katie and how she set Rosie and I up for success!

Goose (formerly Light Blue 7) joined our family earlier this year and we could not have picked a better pup! He has the absolute best demeanor and personality. His sweet disposition is recognized by everyone around and we are regularly recommending Katie for those in search of a golden! We will absolutely be back when we decide to add another furry friend or need training support. Its very clear Katie loves what she does and is proud of her pups. When she walked us out to the car after picking up Goose, she very sweetly kissed him on the nose and told him she loved him, which spoke volumes on the care and attention these dogs receive.

Katie did a wonderful job training my golden retriever. He spent 3 weeks with her and was like a different dog when I picked him up. She kept me updated about his progress and every week provided a report card. At the end of the training, Katie provided a video showing her work with him on each of the obedience steps. It was so obvious he adored her. The video was also so helpful because I can go back and watch it again to make sure I am doing everything correctly. If you're dog needs training, Appalachian Dog Training is wonderful and I recommend her without hesitation!!!

Katie and her team at Appalachian Dog Training are amazing. We brought home our baby girl puppy in January and are so impressed with the quality of care that Appalachian Dog Training gives their dogs and puppies. Highly recommend!

frequently asked questions

Yes! We have never met a dog who didn’t remember their human. Even rescues separated for years still recognize family. Your dog will be thrilled to see you at graduation — many even recognize their owner’s car pulling up. Their memories are truly amazing.
Dogs usually take about 3 days to adjust to the new training environment. Once they know when and where they’ll eat, sleep, and walk, they relax into the routine. A relaxed dog is open to learning and enjoying their training days. For dogs with significant anxiety or fears, especially those who have never left their owners house, the adjustment period may take up to a week.

Each dog is guided through a variety of real-life experiences, including:

  • Crate training & restful crate behavior
  • Potty training & reinforcement
  • Grooming: bathing & nail trimming
  • Exposure to cats, bunnies, livestock, wheelchairs & walkers
  • Stairs, bikes, and confidence courses
  • Social play with small & large dogs
  • Pack walks, daily walks, and training outside with distractions
  • Practice with polite manners: no counter surfing, no jumping on people
  • Creek wading & swimming (weather permitting)
  • Handling and training by multiple staff members

This wide variety builds confidence, stability, and real-world readiness.

When a dog demonstrates behavioral problems, we cannot ignore or avoid them; they must be addressed. While no dog has ever “failed,” some dogs may display leash reactivity, aggression, extreme fears, or other behavioral challenges while enrolled in an On Leash program.

When this occurs, we conduct an in-depth behavioral evaluation to establish clear training expectations and limitations. At that point, you may choose to discontinue On Leash training or transition into our On & Off Leash (Behavioral) training program.

To help place your dog in the most appropriate program from the start, please describe all behaviors openly and honestly during enrollment. Dogs with extreme aggression, disfiguring or severe bite histories, or those deemed dangerous by a municipality are not permitted in any of our programs.

Visits are allowed, but we recommend against them. While visits may comfort you, they are stressful for your dog. Each time you leave, your dog re-enters the adjustment phase, which can set training back by several days. Skipping visits helps your dog progress faster and more smoothly.

You’ll receive a weekly update on Fridays outlining what your dog has learned, what’s next, where they excel, and where they’re still challenged.

We also share daily photos and videos of your pup learning and playing on our Instagram and Facebook pages, so you can follow their journey in real time.

In boarding suites or appropriately sized Ruffland crates. Learn more on our boarding page.

Classes usually consist of about 4 dogs per trainer, though the exact number varies depending on program length. With our full-time staff, every dog receives individual attention, feeding, cleaning, exercise, and structured training from both our Kennel Specialists, Trainers and Head Trainer morning until night.

Training doesn’t stop with your dog. At graduation, we provide:

  • A comprehensive lesson with you and your family
  • A training video of your dog demonstrating commands and leash skills
  • Hands-on coaching to transfer skills from trainer to owner

When clients actively practice what they’ve learned, the transition feels natural and intuitive.

Yes! We provide refresher training for the life of your dog. You can:

  • Call, text, or email us anytime
  • Schedule one-on-one lessons at our Training Center
  • Enroll in Refresher Training if your dog needs a tune-up
